The Sudbury Wolves hosted the Niagara Ice Dogs on Friday night at the Sudbury Arena for their final meeting of the regular season. The Pack had a slow start and were never able to fully come back as they go on to lose to the Ice Dogs by a final score of 5 - 2.
The first period was dominated by the Ice Dogs. They opened the scoring at the 2:00 minute mark of the first period with a shorthanded marker from Andrew Agozzino. Before the end of the frame, the Ice Dogs added goals from David Pacan and Brett Ritchie. The Wolves were outshot 18 - 4 on the period.
Trailing 3 - 0 to start the second period, the Wolves were not going to go down without a fight. The Pack finally hit the scoreboard at 1:26 of the second period on a goal from JOSH LEIVO (MICHAEL KANTOR, NICK BAPTISTE). Just over a minute later, JOSH MCFADDEN (LEIVO, MICHAEL SGARBOSSA) netted a powerplay marker to bring the Wolves within 1. The Wolves outshot the Ice Dogs 20 - 7 in the period.
The third period saw the Ice Dogs respond to the second period challenge. Forward Freddie Hamilton restored the two goal lead at 2:12 of the third period and Myles Doan added a marker at 8:49. With the Wolves unable to respond, the Ice Dogs went on to win the contest by a final score of 5 - 2. The teams split the season series with 3 wins each.
Starting netminder JOEL VIENNEAU had a good outing making 33 saves in the loss, while counterpart Mark Visentin made 27 saves for the win.
The game's three stars were: 1st Star: Brett Ritchie, 2nd Star: MICHAEL KANTOR, 3rd Star: Mark Visentin. The Dickies Hardest Working Player was awarded to BRODY SILK.
The Wolves will spend part of Saturday afternoon at the New Sudbury Centre for a Hockey Card Autograph Session from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. They will then head to Brampton on Sunday for a matinee matchup against the Battalion. Game time is 2:00pm. The Pack will then spend Family Day in Mississauga taking on the Majors at the Hershey Centre. You can catch the live call from Stew Kernan on KFM 95.5.
The Wolves will then spend next weekend on a Western road swing to Saginaw, Plymouth and Windsor before returning to home ice action on Friday, March 2, 2012 to host the Kitchener Rangers.
