The Sudbury Wolves wrapped up their weekend schedule this afternoon at the Sudbury Arena with a hard fought loss against the defending OHL champions, the London Knights. The Knights were led in goal by the outstanding play of KEVIN BAILIE who stopped 33 out of the 35 shots he faced. Despite the loss, the Wolves nearly doubled the Knights on the shot clock, outshooting the Knights 35-18. With the loss the Wolves finished the weekend with a 1-1 record and currently sit 4th in the OHL’s Central Division with a 6-7-0-0 record on the season.
The first period saw the Wolves take advantage of an early 5 on 3 powerplay as JOSH LEIVO banged home a rebound to beat Knights net minder KEVIN BAILIE to put the home team up by one. The Knights would respond with 3:55 remaining in the frame when OLLI MAATTA fired a point shot on net that beat JOEL VIENNEAU upstairs. The goal would send both teams to the dressing room tied up at one heading into the break. The first period saw the Wolves outshoot the Knights by a margin of 8 to 6.
The Wolves would regain their slim one goal lead 4 minutes into the second period when NATHAN PANCEL capitalized on another Wolves 5 on 3 powerplay to score his sixth goal of the season. The Knights would tie up the game on a powerplay of their own at the 9:38 minute mark of the second period when BO HORVAT launched a rocket from the point to beat Wolves goalie JOEL VIENNEAU. The Wolves held the edge in the second frame 15 to 7.
MATT RUPERT would give London their first lead of the afternoon at the 5:17 mark of the third period when he scored his 6th goal of the season to put the Knights up 3-2. The Knights would not look back as BRETT WELYCHKA would go on to increase the Knights lead to 4-2 at the 12:53 mark of the third frame, which all but sealed the deal for London. The third period saw the Wolves outshoot the Knights for the third period in a row by a margin of 10 to 5.
The Wolves are back in action at home next Friday October 26th at 7:35pm when they host the Niagara IceDogs. Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased at the Sudbury Arena Box Office, by calling (705) 671-3000 or online HERE. The game will be sponsored by BELL.
